One of my favorite parts of The Little House story is her love for the bright moon and all the twinkling stars in the sky! Inspired by that love we used glow-in-the-dark stars to practice counting and numeral recognition. We’ve been cooped up for a few weeks now between illness and wildfire smoke so today’s activity was an attempt to help work out some energy too! Don’t you love a great learning activity that gets the blood flowin’ too? 🙂
All you’ll need today is: glow-in-the-dark stars, black construction paper, and a white crayon.
In our hall bath I set out a nice pile of glow-in-the-dark stars. I wanted a dark space where MJ could really see them glow. Over at the table MJ and I read our story. We stopped on the page where the Little House watches the night sky and dreams with curiosity about the lights of the big city.
I wrote the numbers 1-5 on rectangles of black construction paper and used them to review numerals. Then, I told her we were going to race back and forth to get glowing stars to put on her papers. She identified a number, ran to the hall bath, picked out that number of stars (in the dark), and ran back to put them on the corresponding rectangle.
I went into the dark room with her because she’s not a big fan of being in a completely dark space alone (who is?!) We “raced” together back to the table and filled up each rectangle making sure to add the correct amount of stars. She needed a little correction a few times but it provided opportunity to run back to the dark room and try again (more energy and more practice.) She loved the excitement of adding movement to our play today and the thrill of stars that glow! 🙂 Not to mention she had a good review of numerals and their value!
