Our Favorite Weather Books

May 23, 2019

Wild Weather has been such a fun unit to study! We have had the best time exploring BIG thunderstorms to seasonal changes, rainbow crafts and more but the biggest way we learned was through great books and conversations. “Mama, can it really rain syrup like in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs?”  We’ve enjoy reminiscing about the fun things we do each season- planting our garden in the Spring, vacation in the Summer, apple picking in the Fall, and of course, Christmas in the Winter. Before we move on from weather I wanted to share with you the great books we read and some we are still reading. There are LOTS of great non fiction books and we certainly read a good number of those. Here are our favorite picture books we read this month:

It Looked Like Spilt Milk
by Charles G. Shaw

We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tie in this book!  Who doesn’t love cloud watching?! We paired this book with a Learn + PLAY calendar painting activity.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
by Jodi Barrett

This one is way too much of a classic to pass up. I like how sweet and simple it is in contrast to the movie. Not that we don’t like the movie- we do, but classic stories tug on my heart!

Magic School Bus Inside a Hurricane by Joanna Cole

I wanted to very gently teach my littles about extreme weather. We covered big storms very generally. The hearts in our home tend to be sensitive and while I want to teach them I don’t want them to feel scared of the weather. Magic School Bus does a great job of disarming fears while informing. For that reason this book was a great place to start talking about hurricanes. In South Carolina we are well acquainted with late Summer storms and Ms. Frizzle definitely didn’t disappoint- has she ever? 🙂

Little Cloud by Eric Carle

Any time I can wiggle in an Eric Carle book I will! Fortunately this one wasn’t much of a stretch at all! 🙂

Our Seasons by Grace Lin & Ranida T. McKneally

Noah's Noisy Night by Maria Correa

This is a sweet, playful take on the Bible story of Noah and the flood. I tried to pull in Bible stories through out our learning this month noting specifically stories that weather played a significant role. God created weather and used it powerfully for His glory throughout scripture. I thought this was a perfect opportunity to look for those times and share them with my cute crew. Here are a few we discovered:

The perfectly beautiful day of creation.

The clear starry night God made his promise to Abraham.

Elijah calling down fire (we connected this with lightening strikes.)

The storm when Jonah was fleeing God’s call.

Jesus calming the storm.

I know there are more times when weather impacted different events. I have to say I’m reading more aware of weather and looking for it as my personal study of scripture continues. It truly is incredible!

Here are a few of our other favorite picture books we read:

Worm Weather by Jean Taft

The Windy Day by Anna Milbourne

When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

A Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman

Peep and Ducky Rainy Day by David Martin

Kite Day by Will Hillenbrand

Maisy's Wonderful Weather Book by Lucy Cousins

In the Rain by Elizabeth Spur

The Meteorologist In Me by Brittney Shipp
