A Few Fun Spelling Ideas

A Few Fun Spelling Ideas

Spelling is one of those subjects that can either be sort of fun or really pretty boring. I like to err on the side of fun! In light of our renewed goals for spelling I thought I'd share a few of our favorite ways to practice spelling rules and words.

First of all, I choose our words each week based on spelling patterns. We've used the All About Spelling words to practice or I've just googled lists by looking up things like, "third grade words practicing the long e sound." It generally gives a good list I can pick 10 from and use with the kids.

Once I have the list I have a few activities we generally go to for fun. The first is actually a new one this year. I saw an ad for these from Ryan and Rose back in November and thought my crew would really like the physical, sensory aspect of them. They're technically called Imagination Sticks but we call them bendy sticks. haha!

The kids can look at the spelling word and then physically manipulate the bendy sticks to form each letter. I know this sounds elementary but the multi-sensory approach is so great for kids brains no matter their age!

Another fun way to review if you're in a pinch for time or prep, is my spelling activity pages. I bundled them all together in one big resource with 36 different printable spelling activity pages! My crew likes the variety in ways to practice and the creativity in each of these pages!

Last but not least, this one has been a fan favorite for yearsssss. I just use a baking sheet, add epsom salt (to be pretend snow) and give the kids a cotton swab. They write their words in the snow and have the best time doing it.

There are lots of ways to spell words but these are a few of our favorites for the winter!

If you're interested in my spelling activity page bundle I'll link it here.
