We did some of the experiments from the newest Discover + PLAY: Geology unit a few weeks ago but last Tuesday, we started the notebooking part of our study! I set our table with several non-fiction books, lots of rocks, our Discover + PLAY notebooks, and the printables for this lesson!

We started by glueng in the lesson. Then we took turns reading through it going sentence by sentence rotating readers (Sadie, Rut, me, Sadie, Rut....) This is sort of a fun more interactive way to read the lesson keeping everyone involved and engaged.

Next up was our notebooking activity! We cut out paper pockets and glued them into the notebooks.

Next we looked through all our books for information on various types of rocks. The lesson has a set of rock cards with rock names and space to draw pictures of the rocks or write information about them. (The file comes with additional blank dcards without rock names if you want to explore more)

Then we sorted our rock cards into the pockets determining if they were metamorphic, sedimentary, or igneous.

To round out the lesson we watched a short YouTube video on geology.

The lesson includes a short lab activity exploring the various hardness levels of different rocks that we decided to do a different day to spread out our science learning.

I just love this notebooking approach to science and I really think my kids do too! We're excited for the next lesson and lab- it includes building an Earth model from playdough! SO FUN!! Stay tuned for more of our geology adventures!
