Your Fix It! Grammar Questions, Answered

Your Fix It! Grammar Questions, Answered

We have loved using Fix It Grammar as our spine for grammar lessons. It’s simple, sustainable, and effective! I didn’t start with grammar with my crew until they were in 3rd grade. Before then we were focused on learning to read and developing comprehension skills. Once those were pretty well established- then I moved to introduce grammar. This program has been fantastic. However, the marking strategy for diagraming sentences did get tricky. I learned about the highlighter method last year and there was no turning back.

I shared about this concept on IG and had a good amount of feedback with great questions. Since there was such a good response, I figured a blog post would be a better long-term location for the Q&A. Here are the questions we chatted about on IG:

1. Do you keep the highlighter colors the same each time (nouns are always blue)?

2. Ever do IEW with Fix It?

3. Is this all you use for grammar?

4. Have you had to supplement the lessons to teach the concepts at all?

5. "The story is in the back. 'Rewrite' can be cut into its own book. Check the back cover."

6. Why does this make so much more sense? Why don't they do this to begin with?

7. What age did you start this with?

We didn’t start grammar lessons until 3rd grade. All children learn at different paces and for some they may need the gift of time. Better to start later than early in this area. If you start too soon you’ll introduce frustration and confusion. If you wait until reading skills are strong there’s a greater probability that the concepts will click and the lessons will go much more smoothly.

8. What happens if they make a mistake? You can’t erase highlighter?!
