Leap Day Learning

February 27, 2024

The shortest month of the year is February! Most years it has just 28 days! However, every four years we get an added day! We call it Leap Day! That’s because it takes 365 1/4 days for the Earth to travel around the sun. A regular year has 365 days. If we did not observe Leap Day it would affect our seasons and the calendar.

For Leap Day this year I thought we would do a few SIMPLE things to celebrate this special day. Here are a few ideas we may use and I thought maybe you’d be interested in them too!

1. Capture This Leap Day for the Next!

Brainstorm together some special things particular to this year or season of life you’re in. Write them down and keep them in safe place until the next Leap Day. Think of ideas that would be fun to look back and remember. Some ideas might be: a typical day in your home, everyone’s favorite things, what is special or most important on everyone’s hearts.

2. Frog Fun

When we think of leaping immediately the picture of a frog comes to mind. There are several fun frog themed activities in the Peaceful Pond Learn + PLAY Calendar that could be super fun to print, prep, and use!

3. Leaping Contest

Take the learning outside! Grab some sidewalk chalk and mark off a starting place. Have everyone jump (or leap) as far as they can. Mark off the distance each person jumps and measure it. Compare jumps. See who can leap the furthest and measure that distance. A super simple way to tie in some math while everyone is having a ball!

4. Big Kid Calculations

This one would be fun for older learners. Count back from 2024 to see how many leap years there have been AND what years were they? If that’s too much maybe your learners could calculate to figure out how many Leap Days they have seen in their life time.

5. Practice Skip "Leap" Counting

What numbers can you skip count from? Can you do 2’s? 5’s? 10’s? Can anyone try to skip count by 4’s?

These are just a few ideas that could really spring board you into lots of other creative fun! Whether you celebrate or not I hope your Leap Day is extra happy!
